SVN on Windows Vista freezes

Hello,
For the past years I have been using subversion on my XP machine without
any problem, both over TortoiseSVN and the SVN command line. Now I have
got a new machine, with Windows Vista. Not only that the newly gained
resources and power are eaten away by unnecessary fluff that does not even
get close to the rounded GUI of a Mac, no subversion client seems to work
any more (v 1.4.4).
I have tried "svn co svn://my.ip.address/project project" from the command
line, but nothing happens, even after 30 minutes, not even an error
message (and there is no verbose mode). On TortoiseSVN, a similar picture.
Both on the repo browser and the checkout, the dialog seems to be stuck in
some connection setup.
The routes that did not lead to success:
1. Being in the administrator group, I added myself to the users of C: and
assigned full control to myself. This did not help.
2. Disable the TCP auto tune feature. Did not help either.
3. I excluded the project folder fromt he Visrus checker, no success.
4. The firewall is disabled.
For some strange reason, this morning, immediately after booting my PC, I
could browse the repository and checkout a project. A few minutes later, I
wanted to update the local copy, but it did not work any more and hasen't
ever since. What prevents SVN to get through?
Many thanks for your hints and help,
peter
