When I compare 2 Word docs in Office 2000 where at least one has track changes
on I get the following message in a Dialog box with the title Windows Script
Host.

Error: Command Failed
Code: 800A1066
Source: Microsoft Word

Is this the reason you originally checked in the use of the new compare method?
If this is the case then it looks like the bug with comparing 2 docs with
tracking history on is still open against office 2000 but is now fixed on
2002+.
Can we still get the version check in so that Office 2000 diff on word docs
still works as it used to?

This makes sense. I was not able to pin point exact version numbers to Office
releases figures. Is Office 2000 always less than 10?
