Getting Started

I've seen this question posted all over the web but it has never been answered
(that I can find).

On windows, using the Tortoise GUI, there is an import option. It assumes that
you are pulling your import from a (unix) web server somewhere and are using a
unix client to do the pulling.

I, and many others, are just trying to use it locally and need to get existing
files under version control. Since you can't create a repository out of an
existing populated directory,
HOW DO YOU IMPORT LOCAL FILES???

I've followed every suggestion that has been posted for what to enter in the
"URL of Repository" box, and all reasonable permutations to no avail.

The messages:
unable to open an ra_local session to URL and
Unable to open repository file:///c:/myfiles

don't provide any help.

If this software is not useful for local, standalone use, please say so.
Otherwise I would really appreciate some help at getting started.
