The exact order was :
clear Subversion cache (manually deleting file in auth\svn.simple directory)
run svn list http://xyz
just tried that again with 1.4.2 and it worked without asking for authentication.
On the same pc, I cleared the cache for TSVN 1.4.1 and then ran the repobrowser.
It asked for authentication straight away.
I'll try to do test with other versions as well.
