I hesitated to say something since this might break the original
functionality. But...since this thread prompted me to discover this...FYI...

The registry has a "string value" called "NeverShowExt". The presence of
this key hides the extension for all purposes. In hunting for these, I
discovered another one, called "IsShortcut". I bet this controls the
shortcut arrow. Maybe the behavior, too?

YMMV, haven't tried it yet, hacking with the Registry is risky, et cetera...
