FWIW, Matlab uses *.m for it's source code (text file) and *.mat for its
proprietary-format binary data files, so dealing with *.mat files is
still an issue for those who use Matlab. One can save *.mat files with
a different extension (at least in Matlab 7.x) and Matlab will figure
out that it is a *.mat format file when it loads it, so that's a
possible work-around.
