Sven,
When I first posted my problem here I was using a linux server at svn
1.1.3, and windows tortoise clients at 1.3.2.
After your previous append, I installed a test server on windows at svn
1.3.0, and I saw a big improvement in the behaviour. The error
consistently says "object of the same name already exists", and supplies
the correct filename, regardless of how many times I try to update.
Also, recovery is very simple - just rename/delete the offending file,
and update again.
Armed with this knowledge, I decided to embrace building the 1.3.0 svn
code on the linux server with the real repository (after backing up of
course). I am now seeing the same behaviour as on the latest windows
server :).
I am much more comfortable with the state of the wc, and the reporting
of the error. I do not wish to get into a debate over whether it should
merge new files vs giving an error, as I now have an acceptable process.
Also, as pointed out by Stefan, further discussion should really be on
the Subversion list.
I do thank all posters for their useful input in helping solve my problem.
Brian.
