I'm curious about that. I have quite a lot of data under revision
control on my old laptop and it doesn't bother it at all.
Have you had a look at the FAQ and Tortoise documents or even the
context sensitive setting menu regarding icons?

Lets know it they don't provide setting to do what you want.
