You will only see "external" as long as that directory hasn't been
crawled by the cache yet. And "external" isn't a real status - you would
miss for example if there were modifications in that folder. So what's
the point in showing "externals" there?

No, you're just too impatient. Just wait for the cache to crawl that
folder too.

That's explorer truncating it. But why don't you use the "SVN short Url"
column instead?
