Most people do not realize that this is Newton being a class-A jerk. The
comment is addressed to Hooke who had accused Newton of suppressing
Hooke's work, then publishing some of it as Newton's own. The phrase
"standing on the shoulders of giants" is much older, but Newton uses it
here in a derogatory fashion: Hooke was a hunchback, and this is Newton
thumbing his nose at him. Not very flattering when put back in context.
