I have also been using externals quite frequently recently, and a menu entry would be very much appreciated.
I realize that reading properties would be way to expensive, but another option would be not to check at all. I would currently very much prefer to have a permanent "Externals" menu entry for all folders than having to go through all clicks that are needed today to get to the externals dialog. If this would be made optional it wouldn't clutter up the menu for everyone who does not use externals.

Btw, this may be the time to implement the occasionally requested "second level" context menu, where one could move the lesser used context menu items (Relocate, I'm looking at you...) to make the regular menu less cluttered. (As a bonus we could do away with the hidden easter egg ctrl-right click context menu and simply put "Diff with URL" on that second level by default as well.)
