Hmm... This is quite unfortunate IMHO. It is very useful to be able to quickly see if externals are "clean" or not by looking at the overlay of the folder containing the externals.
Now I'm a heavy user of the "Check for modifications"-dialog, so it's not all too bad for me, since the "Check for modifications"-dialog works as desired. But this gives an inconsistency in what the overlays show, and what I see in "Check for modifications".
Earlier I could rely on that if the overlays were green (and up to date), nothing would be shown in "Check for modifications". This does not hold any more. :-(
Suggestion: Wouldn't it be possible to be able to establish relations between working copies in the status cache? If an external in one working copy points to another working copy, a relation is added in the status cache. Then when changes occurs in a working copy, relations are checked and propagated up to the working copy holding the external.
