The reason is very simple: you can only save the right file. There's
only one "Save" or "Save as" function. And that one works on the right
file as is expected.
How would you handle situations where there are edits in both the left
and the right view?

Once you start allowing edits on other views than the right, you open a
can of worms.
But if you think this is really necessary and you find a good way to
deal with all the issues, I won't stop you :)
