Thanks for a good explanation. It's very clear, and I was
wondering about how this problem had happened.

Since you asked, here's a nitpick:
in paragraph 8 ("When upgrading, msi doesn't just upgrade
unconditionally ..."),
it looks like there's a missing ownership apostrophe in "msi uses the
files version info ..."
That's the only thing I would change.
