OK, I can add one more to that list: the ability to forward reference
the main section in the docs, which I can't do with a separate file. I
will revert the separate file and add to the main help file instead.
This is the new plan:

1. Combine and cut down the preface and introduction into a single
preface section.
2. Replace the existing section 1with the Quick Start guide. This will
have to include installation, but I may move the section on spell
checkers and language packs into a new appendix.

This is going to mean a bit of churn for the doc translators, but I
hope the result will be better. I think our existing preface and intro
is too long at the moment. I will create an issue to cover the
re-organisation part.
