Now that's a very bad analogy. This is not a bug in TMerge but a design
decision. Hinting that I would rather leave a crashing bug open than
fixing it really hurts.

As I said, this is a design decision. I've asked around in my office
before I implemented this. And most of my coworkers agreed that allowing
to edit another file than the target one would be bad and confusing.
