Relying on colors only is somewhat risky so icons would add to
accessibility.
However, 16px icons on small displays with high resolutions are also
difficult
to spot. It may be a good idea to use styling for the text (bold etc.) and
make
it customizable, just like colors? I think styled text would be much more
distinguishable. What you think?

May be to leave colours, add icons and add font styles at the same time -
then anyone will be using the method of distinguishing most appropriate for
him?
