I'm pretty sure we can rule out the .po files. I just did a text and a
binary compare (to check for weird unicode) of the Dutch trunk and
branch translations.

For example the "icon overlays", "icon overlays::*" and "hook scripts",
"hook scripts::*" are identical in both .po files and I didn't find any
UTF8 relics. So it should work in theory.
The only culprit I can think of at the moment is restext.
