I just tried this and both didn't throw any errors. For reference I'm using:

svn, version 1.5.4 (r33841)
   compiled Oct 23 2008, 08:54:42

Ah, you're right! This doesn't cause the error!

So why does ignoring whitespace cause this error to happen?
