No, not at all. The results count. I created the initial "XP Style" icons plus my personal favourite "Straight" in a bitmap editor. I don't know if your toolset can handle transparency (alpha channel). This would probably be necessary in some cases.

List or report mode use 16x16 icons, which means that the available space for the overlays will be even smaller. We need four different icon sizes 256x256 Vista Icons 48x48, 32x32 and 16x16 in RGB/A and 256 color format, so seven versions of an icon in total. The 16x16 is the critical one, because it needs a lot of manual touch up. It's also critical, because it is overlayed on a 16x16 icon. I found that using 9x9 pixels of the overlay leaves enough of the main icon visible while giving me "enough" pixels to make the overlay recognizable.
