I need a step-by-step recipe here of what exactly you do, what button
you click, which dialog you use, what URL you enter, ...

Now I'm confused. I thought you wanted that TSVN would use file://
instead of file:///\ ???

You mean you opened the checkout dialog, entered file:///\server/folder
and then the checkout failed?
