Only "Verein", not "gemeinnützig" (=charitable, non-profit organization). To be accepted as a non-profit organization in Germany, you have to fulfill certain criteria, which a "software association" probably will never do or - if it gets accepted - will lose that status after the first tax declaration / review by the fiscal authorities.

Association sounds interesting, but if you found something like this, you can also open a private business and accept credit card payments.
