if it's optional, I won't install it -> no revenue 8-)
But I wouldn't mind the installer asking (very) prominently for a
donation and presenting a link to the donation page .
And no, I wouldn't count something like "please consider donating ..."
as "begging"!
_And_: the easier and faster the donation process the more users will
donate. That also means you should provide multiply ways for the
donation: Credit card, bank transfer, click-and-buy, paypal, ...
