Hi Stefan,
Haven't read through the thread yet, because I don't want to spoil my thoughts with the things others have written.
Even though I think you deserve all the benefit you can get for your hard work on TortoiseSVN, I hate that particular idea. I don't have any software installed on my PC that contains ads or toolbars and I'll never do this.
If I notice that any software tries to install or has installed junk on my PC, I abort the installation immediately, remove the software and never touch it again. Full stop.
TortoiseSVN is used by software professionals most of the time and installing Adware with it just leaves a very bad impression.
Software either costs money, or it's free. And then it's a free decision of the user if he want's to donate. We could indulge ourselves in the thought "if we would have received $1 per download, we would be rich now", but that's ... IMHO.
I'd rather ask my boss to donate something to the project again. I suggest that we place the following text in the introduction of the docs:
"Even though TortoiseSVN is free software, a lot of work has gone into it. If you are using TortoiseSVN profesionally or in a corporate environment, please consider donating 5$/5€ per installation to honor the developers' work".
I think that a concrete figure makes it easier for people to donate than just the abstract "Please donate"
Maybe also show this text (with a 5 second countdown before "OK" is enabled ;)) if TortoiseProc is loaded for the first time after an installation, so people who update will be reminded.
Now I read through the thread.
Cheers
