The best way to make new friends is to come crashing through the front door while using offensive language against the people that you are visiting. Congratulations on great behaviour!
As a happy Delphi 7 & TortoiseSVN user I can assure you, that it is absolutely no problem to use a template file to compile version or revision numbers numbers into your project. We use the IDE for development & debugging plus some Nant scripts to create releases. I can assure you that they play nicely together.
