Your suggestions for better visibility of regexes sounds good. I didn't know that regex support exists in the search box.

Let me just add 2 cents to suggestion 3)

Take a look at the search Dialog in PSPad, especially the 2 '?' and '!' buttons next to the search expression. They contain some pre-defined regexes. Although I rarely use the complex ones, I like this as a short reference.
