You're right, identical pixels show in the background color (well, they
are made to disappear). And the pixels which are different show up in
the 'merged' (OR'ed) color of both pixels.
That's the best we can do, really.
I guess you're comparing some photo images with this. But this is not
intended for such images but for simple colored images (e.g., the
pcb/cad images mentioned previously in this thread).

Zooming fixed in revision 10219 and 10220.

We had them at the top of the view before, but it wasn't easily
accessible for people (they didn't notice it there).
