This bug still exists. The left image is at 100% when overlay mode is
turned off.

The "fit together" function now looks really good, if it is switched on.
Also the zooming works as expected. Very nice :)

However when I switch "fit together" off, nothing happens. There's not
much sense in making the button sticky, if it's no real toggle.

That's why I suggested using two zoom factors for each image. Factor1 is
used to fit the image into the window and factor2 is used to stretch the
image, so it fits onto the other image. I would have expected that the
"fit together" button turns the application of Factor2 on/off
