For a general solution to this problem, you have to ask on the
Subversion mailing list. I could work around this in the log dialog,
because there we already have the log information ready. But we don't
have it ready in the merge dialog.

Yes, the 'latest' nightly is built against the SVN trunk. It now
contains merge tracking and sparse directories (not fully implemented in
TSVN yet though).
But the working copies are still compatible with 1.4.x clients.
