Perhaps there is already some way to do this ....

There should be some configuration option that prevents you from committing changes
without first providing a log message. Otherwise, when you show log the message
field is empty and (hence) useless. In addition, adding a log message post-facto
is not the easiest thing to do. Perhaps an alternate solution is to simplify the
latter task.
