Sven, thanks for that. I've been reading the SVN Book and came to the
conclusion that what I want to do wasn't possible.

What I don't understand is that the ability to exclude files and
folders when adding an existing code base to SVN seems like something
everyone would want to do, but there is no straightforward way to
accomplish it. I have to say this seem like a quite basic shortcoming
to me.

The documentation for svn:ignore specifically states you use this
before doing an Import or Add, but that isn't possible, except by
jumping through the hoops in the FAQ article you referred to.

I (now) appreciate that this isn't a TSVN issue.
