I am just one of the translators for TSVN. Whenever I see problems
with the available space for specific translated strings, I ask on the
dev list to have that field widened (if possible). If no room is
available, the translation has to be shortened.

I am translating English into Dutch, which usually poses no problems
(on average the Dutch translations are only 10 to 20% wider than the
original English texts. The largest strings in TSVN are usually the
tooltips, but they are dynamically sized.
