hybrid updater/treewalking iconcache - feasable suggestion?

Given the new higher latency iconcache I wonder if it makes sense to
supplement the out of process treewalker with a small in process program
that could receive information about additions, commits, updates
and immediately make updates.

The treewalker could still respond to changes that another client makes
to the repo and deal with wholesale updates.
The shell embedded program could be quite responsive since it would only
have to respond to changes instead of polling the directory.
