In poEdit you can create plurarform.
In some language is different form of word depending of count. for example:
    EN SK
1 path cesta
2 paths cesty
4 paths cesty
5 paths ciest
...

In poEdit (I don't study it realy) is possible to set for more plurar forms.
For example in tortoise_sl (they do not done - I don't know reason) is:
"Plural-Forms: nplurals=4; plural=(n%100==1 ? 1 : n%100==2 ? 2 :
n%100==3 || n%100==4 ? 3 : 0);\n"

I never use gettext, but I think this replace index to array of string
defined like this:

msgid "Page created in %s second"
msgid_plural "Page created in %s seconds"
msgstr[0] "Stránka vygenerovaná za %s sekundu"
msgstr[1] "Stránka vygenerovaná za %s sekundy"
msgstr[2] "Stránka vygenerovaná za %s sekúnd"
