Problems with the the length of names and Windows

We have used Subversion 1.2.3 with Tortoise 1.2.2 build 4295 – 32 bit. We have a problem when the path of folders and files is more large than 256 characters.
 
We have a problem when the length of the path of the folders and the names of the files surpass the 256 caracteres.

We used WindowsXP and, when we do checkout, Tortoise sends a message of error and it stop the checkout.

We has searched in the manual of Tortoise and it only said to put a minimum of characters in the messages, but we did not find the possibility of to limit nº of characters when we make a Commit or a Import. SVN or Tortoise allows to limit this?
