One problem (with my idea) is that you can apply it immediately after copying to the clipboard, but if you copy into a text file and save to disk then later copy the text back to the clipboard you won't be able to apply it from the clipboard. This might be a bit confusing.

That's a very clever idea! +1 from me.
I wish editors and IDEs could apply patches from clipboard.
And maybe if Tortoise starts doing that, Microsoft and others will also implement such a good feature in their products.

I feel a bit jealous, that it was not my idea :-)

You could add a 2nd custom format to the clipboard at the same time (ie as well as the text) that just acts as a flag to indicate that the text is a patch.

It would be difficult to tell if the data in the clipboard really is a
patch or just some other text. And that would mean that TortoiseMerge
(which does the applying of patches) would allow to "apply patch from
clipboard" a lot, even if it would fail afterwards.
