I'd vote for:
- Add property-status column.
- Start diff on doubleclick

Keep it as similar to the commit/check for modifications-dialogs as
possible.

Disable diffing. Just like in the commit-dialog if you select multiple
entries.

Maybe have a "Recursive" check-box in the property dialog when a folder
is selected. If the check-box is checked, all present entries are grayed
(to indicate that they are only set on the folder and will not propagate
recursively on OK). New or edited properties become black, and when OK
is clicked the black properties are set recursively, overwriting any
already present properties.

(Might not be the most solid idea ever... But a starting point for
something to discuss.)
