Cool idea - an in-place import in a single revision. I will
try this out sometime.

Regarding my other questions, I was pointed to

via private mail. After reading, I intended to suggest disabling
non-recursive checkouts altogether until this issue is
implemented, but since you found a clever use case for this
feature...
