Users have, in the past, tended to be very wary of applications that
phone home. That's because of the rampant spyware/adware that is out
there. However, an innocent automatic update checking routine is
perfectly fine by me. Also, spyware/adware is being kept in check by
plenty of anti-spyware tools and most software authors are now afraid to
include spyware/adware packages - so the phone-home fear is really quite
unfounded.
