I think I would go with the Tooltips. They are there exactly when I need them and wastes no screen space when I dont need them. And clicking is used to select a node so we would have to come up with something different there...

What I meant was that they are a bit to similar, and somewhat confusing. The "added"-icon looks like a copy-action to me. I would prefer one that graphically symbolises a newly created item. (A plus with an uppward arrow comming out of it maybe?)
