Not much help from there, except the hint to use their precompiled bdb
libs and dll's.

But I got it working now - I admit it took quite a while, but I'd rather
have the bdb's compiled with VC8 than relying on a VC6 build which uses
an old CRT and might cause other problems.

The nightly build which has this fix included is now available:
http://mapcar.org/tsvn-snapshots/1.3.x/
