This isn't countering what you requested but a little piece of software
that really saves my bacon on such occasions is Recovery Bin from
Executive Software. It keeps all recently deleted files unless they are
marked "ignore". So if your IDE does multiple saves, it keeps each and
every overridden file for a time period you set or until the bin
overflows when the oldest files actually go to God.
Same when any piece of software our you (via Explorer) deletes or
overrides a file.
You can restore from any one of of the multiple saved files to anywhere.

It's worth the price in peace of mind alone.
And I have no affiliation with them, just a very thankful user.

Peter
