no absolute need to update the server, see
http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/compatibility.html

I recommend to update the Server to 1.2.x to be able to use the new features
of 1.2, see http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/tsvn_1.2_releasenotes.html

After that upgrade the repository with a dump/import cycle resulting in better
performance:
