Can you fill in the etc etc and give us the full URL you are using.

Presumably Check for modifications works ok until you ask it to check
the repository?

Correct. It shouldn't make any difference for file:/// access

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. That error typically
occurs when the URL is wrong, so we need to know exactly what the URL is.
