[TSVN] x64 port going stable?

Hi,

As a start: thats the kind of answer I really like Stefan :)

> - test installer
That shouldn't be too tricky, right?

> - patch the external libs where needed (automate the patching)
I agree with that, thats the tricky part. To get a bit more precise
these libs would be: openssl, zlib, apr, bdb, intl, neon (I think I
missed some). Most of these libs where already patched for x86_64-linux
which might save some unneeded work; if your really lucky you only need
to update the libs.

> - have someone actively maintain/test the x64 port (I can't do this
> myself due to lack of proper x64 computer)
I agree with that, too: you shouldn't release something untested. I dont
know what kind of machine you currently got and if you got any plans
on upgrading so I thought about an alternatives, and you might already
guess it: what about an emulator for x64? :) The alternative would be
releaseing something unfinished as alpha/beta, since you can compile x64
code anywhere you want, the compiler will still give you the appropriate
warnings.

I think I know what you are thinking now: "why should I develop for a
platform I can't test on, I haven't got myself - why?" And you don't
know how mutch I would like to donate you an x64. So I did a minimal
calculation:
I am assuming, that you keep your HDDs, CD/DVD, AC-Unit, tower, sound-
and graphics card.
125¤ AMD64 3000+
50¤ 512Mb of RAM
30¤ for cooling (since we want it quiet)
10¤ to "convert" your 20pin -> 24pin
90¤ some nice mainboard

----
305¤
Thats the absolute minimum, and still quite a lot of money. I don't know
if you are "playing games"; a Geforce7 with a nice AMD64 4000+ & SLI
mainboard, 1GB RAM and a new AC-Unit, that you would need, would cost
you around 1300¤, just to compare a bit. I think its not that simple and
you life next door ;)
To cut a long story short: I think I can provide you with some money, if
it helps the x64 port. It won't be enought for a complete computer,
thats for sure, but enought to help you buy one. Just send me a mail if
it sounds interessting to you; judgeing from your name you live in
austria, swiss or germany (as I do).
Cheers,
Chris
