I don't know what has actually happened, but I traced back the log entries
and found out that they started looking weird on August 4th. Then I diffed
two database backups from Aug 4th and and 5th and found out that the
"Anonymous" user has disappeared in between. Reinstalled this user and
everything looks fine now.
I remember switching off Account creation for everyone last week, because I
had to reject a few unwanted accounts every day. As a side effect that must
have killed "Anonymous".
