Simon, Erik, Mark - thank you for your help.

Sorry for posting the issue on the Tortoise list, but I had thought it
might have been a version incompatibility.

Last night I added a tmp folder with its subdirectories in some .svn
folders and the svn commands were beginning to work...

How embarrassing: WinZip ignores empty folders - neither shows them when
looking into the archive nor extracts them. And it doesn't even have an
option to prevent it skipping empty folders.

Anyway, I extracted the wc on a Linux machine and have a working working
copy now.
