...except that if you are using a generic windows attribute, you have to
realize that different files are going to use it in different ways. In
this case Author works well with plaintext files, but any Office documents
or Crystal Reports or any other metadata-aware file format is going to
alter the meaning of Author. For instance, I have an .XLS file in SVN
that has an Author of my employer's full name, even though he has not
viewed or changed that file in several years.

Keeping the existing Author attribute would be a good idea for the reasons
that you describe above, but an SVN Author which is the authoritative
author from SVN would also be good when such confusion can exist.
