No, it's probably not a bad approach. But if they're seeing CPU pegged
high, I would be less likely to assume that it's a DMA issue (the disk
access is probably all seek and not much data transfer anyway), and more
likely to assume that it's the file-date/hash calculation problem which has
been mentioned already this morning.

I'm still not 100% sure it's not 'overcrawling' anyway, which would make
the biggest difference.
