I'll spare you the trip -- no, there's not a way to do what you asked.
The auto-props feature is keyed solely on fnmatch-like patterns.

Interestingly, some quick testing with Subversion HEAD seems to
support exactly what you did (though I was pretty sure Subversion
didn't use to). I wonder if this is new to 1.2.0, perhaps due to the
new fixed-length keywords feature which was explicitly designed so
that keywords *could* be used in binary files?
